The WhatsApp Playbook Use the channel they read. Without being muted.

WhatsApp gets read because it is personal. Every message you send spends a little of that. This guide shows whose permission you need, what a broadcast is for, how to run the inbox when you are the only one in it, and what to count as success.

// THE PROBLEM

The attention is not yours. It is lent.

Emails sit unopened, posts reach whoever the algorithm picks, and yet a WhatsApp message gets read in minutes. So you put the marketing there. That is half right, and the wrong half is expensive. The attention comes from the relationships the app is built for: family, friends, the plumber coming on Thursday. You are a guest in that space. Behave like a broadcaster and you get muted, blocked or reported, and the platform notices before you do.

// SIX REASONS IT WORKS, AND WHY EACH ONE CUTS BOTH WAYS

None of them is "everyone is on it".

It is read, because of the company it keeps

Your message lands in the same list as a partner, a friend and a group chat. That is the attraction and the risk. You are judged against the people they want to hear from, not against other businesses.

It is a conversation by default

The reply is one tap away, in the same thread, with no form to fill. Its strength is not announcing. Treat it as a broadcast pipe and your most conversational channel becomes your least.

It shortens question to decision

Most buying stalls on one small doubt. On a website it becomes a bounce, by email a two day round trip. In a message it is thirty seconds of typing on each side.

It builds continuity with a named person

A thread is a running history. When you are a business of one, that person is you, and the same voice answers every time. Being alone is a plain advantage here.

It reaches people without an algorithm

A message to someone who agreed to hear from you arrives. No feed ranking decides whether it is shown. It is not an audience you own the way a list is, and the guide says so.

The penalty is asymmetric

An unread email costs nothing. An unwanted message costs you their willingness to hear from you at all. Repeat it and you can lose the ability to send.

02 THE GUIDE 21 PAGES · 5 PARTS · 3 CHECKLISTS

Be invited, brief, useful, easy to answer and easy to leave.

Not a way to look bigger. A way to behave like a welcome guest, so the channel people actually read keeps reading you.

// WHAT'S INSIDE

Five parts, in order.

Part One · The honest case

Six mechanisms you can pull on purpose, and the honest limit: a poor channel for cold acquisition, superb at turning existing interest into decisions.

Part Two · Decide before you send anything

Consent that is explicit, specific and recorded. What they are agreeing to. How they leave. How you connect, templates and the conversation window, broadcasts versus the inbox, and when you answer.

Part Three · Run it simply

One business number off your personal phone. The sentence to finish before every broadcast. Narrow segments, the count you check, writing for the phone, testing on yourself and sending at their time.

Part Four · Make it produce business

Every conversation on a contact. Buying questions become deals. Measure replies, not delivery, count opt outs per send, treat response time as revenue and review it monthly.

Part Five · The checklists

Before the first message, every broadcast, and the inbox with the monthly review. Each line is a box you either can or cannot tick.

Part Five · The mistakes to avoid

Ten ways to burn the one thing that makes the channel valuable. Every one is a choice, and the fix is available to you this week.

// YOUR FIRST WEEK
1 Finish the sentence

Before your next broadcast, complete this from their side: they sent me this because I ______. If the honest ending is "am on their list", do not send it.

2 Check who said yes

Having a number is not permission. List who gave an explicit yes to WhatsApp specifically, and leave out every number collected for something else until they opt in.

3 Set your reply hours

Decide when you answer and how fast, then say so in your profile or first automatic reply. A stated delay is forgiven. An unwatched inbox is not.

WHO IT'S FOR
This is for you if
  • You already run a one person business and want a channel that turns interest into decisions.
  • You want to scale your reach without hiring someone to answer messages.
  • You are willing to send less so that each message is still noticed.
  • You want a method you can tick through, not a list of tricks.
Skip it if
  • You want to find strangers who have never heard of you. The guide calls it a poor channel for cold acquisition.
  • You plan to message every number you have collected.
  • You want the current platform rules, timings and prices. Those belong at the source and they change.
  • You want to judge success by how many messages you sent.
// THE POINT

The attention was never yours to spend freely.

It was lent by people who agreed to hear from you, and it lasts exactly as long as you keep the terms. Let the tools carry the routine, so your evenings go to the conversations that turn into decisions.

?QUESTIONS
Is this only for people who send a lot of messages?
No. It is mostly about sending less. The guide argues that fewer, narrower broadcasts, each with a reason the recipient would recognise, get more replies and fewer opt outs.
Is a phone number enough to message someone?
No. A number given for a delivery or a login was given for that purpose. Consent must be explicit, specific to WhatsApp and recorded, so you can show when, where and to what.
What is a template?
On the official route, a pre-written message, submitted and approved in advance, that you use to start a conversation once the customer's window has closed. Write it as an invitation to reply.
How do I know it is working?
Follow replies, then conversations, then deals and the revenue they brought. Count opt outs per campaign alongside. Read is a health metric, not a result.
Does it give the current platform rules?
No. It tells you which decisions to make and to check the current terms with your provider, because rules, timings and prices change.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Enter your name and email, and the PDF is yours to keep.

Use the channel they read.
