DAY 05 / Los cimientos
Get this wrong, everything built on top is wrong
Everyone builds the UI first. That's why they rebuild in 6 months.
Everyone builds the walls before the foundation
Yesterday: the tools that work. Today: the foundation that determines everything.
Everyone makes the same mistake. They open Claude and say: "Build me a beautiful dashboard with charts and graphs!"
They build the UI. The buttons. The forms. The pretty screens.
Then they realize: where does the data actually LIVE?
They built the walls before the foundation. Now they're rebuilding everything.
The database is THE most important decision you make
Here's what nobody tells you. Get the database right, and everything else is easy. Get the database wrong, and you rebuild everything in 6 months.
Everyone builds UI first because it's visual. It's exciting. You can show it. But the database is the blueprint. The foundation. The thing that holds everything.
Why does it matter this much? Because your database design decides what your product can and can't do later.
Think about your house
Same with apps. It's not about how it looks first. It's about what holds it up.
You can't decorate your way out of a missing foundation.
The pattern I learned building 679 tables
Here's the part that takes the pressure off: 80-90% of databases are THE SAME.
You're not inventing a new database structure. You're cloning a proven template. Almost every SaaS needs the same core pieces.
Clone it. Customize the names. Done.
Think about your data BEFORE you build the UI
I'm sending you "Database Fundamentals For Non-Technical People." It explains databases using spreadsheet analogies. Zero jargon. Just what you need to know.
Plus the 10 tables template — clone it, rename the tables to match your app, and you have your foundation.
Tomorrow: the restaurant analogy. How your app actually works. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
You've been stuck long enough. Another January saying "this is the year." Another December with the idea still in the notebook. The database is where it starts. Not the UI. Not the features. The data. Get this right, everything else follows.
If your mind went to the screens or the feature list, you're the person opening Claude and saying "build me a beautiful dashboard." It feels like progress because it's visual and you can show it — but you're building walls with no foundation, which is exactly the work you tear down in 6 months.
If you went to the data first, you already think like the good builder: foundation, then plumbing, then walls. And if you've just been stuck, the way out isn't another January resolution — it's one decision made in the right order. The database first.
- A - Straight to the screens — the dashboard, the buttons, the pretty UI
- B - The features I want it to have, one by one
- C - I honestly have no idea where the data would live
- D - I start with the data: who the users are and what my app manages
- E - I've been stuck so long I haven't pictured building it at all
